Abstract: Chemotherapy extravasation of chemotherapyas a complication of chemotherapy that causes harm to the elderly who receive them. Prevention is the way to reduce the incidence of extravasation. This operational study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of implementation of best practice guidelines (BPGs) for chemotherapy extravasation prevention among elderly with cancer in the, Female Surgical Ward of, Lampang Hospital between March and May 2014. The subjects consisted 20 registered nurses and 40 elderly with cancer receiving chemotherapy. The instruments used in this study was the Best Practice Guidelines for Chemotherapy Extravasation Prevention, developed by Janmano, et.al (2009). The effectiveness of the Best Practice Guidelines was evaluated based on clinical outcomes which included incidence of chemotherapy extravasation, satisfaction of nurses with best practice guidelines implementation and satisfaction of elderly with care provided based on the guidelines. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Fisher exact probability test. The results of this study revealed that: 1. There was no incidence of chemotherapy extravasation in either the non-Implementation group and BPGs implementation group. 2. All nurses had a high level of satisfaction with the implementation of the BPGs. 3. All elderly patients who received service based on the BPGs had a high level of satisfaction. Study findings demonstrate effectiveness of the Best Practice Guidelines Implementation for Chemotherapy Extravasation Prevention among elderly with cancer. Therefore, registered nurses should be encouraged to use the BPGs for improving the quality of care in elderly with cancer who receive chemotherapy.
