Abstract

Nursing handover is the transferring of patient information from one shift to another shift. The purpose of this developmental study was to improve the quality of nursing handovers in an Eye Ward at Lampang Hospital using the nine steps of the FOCUS PDCA quality improvement process: find a process to improve; organize a team that knows the process; clarify current knowledge of the process; understand the cause of process variation; select the process points of improvement; plan the improvements; apply the improvements; check the result; and act to hold gains and continue improvements (Deming as cited in McLaughlin & Kaluzny, 1999). The study population included five registered nurses. The research instruments were the interview guidelines and the nursing handover observation checklist. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. The results showed that after using the FOCUS-PDCA process and the SBAR method, registered nurses could correctly and completely perform more than 90% of nursing handovers. Problems of the quality improvement process included incomplete content in nursing handovers and the discontinuation of the nursing handover process. Registered nurses satisfied with the quality improvement due to the precise procedure of the nursing handover process, the use of handover record as an evidence, the quality and continuity of patient care. The result of this study showed that the quality improvement process using the SBAR method when applied to the nursing handover process is useful for nursing service. Nurse administrators can use the FOCUS-PDCA process and the SBAR method to improve the quality of nursing handovers in other units.
