Abstract: Risk management of needlestick and sharps injuries aims to reduce potential injuries among healthcare workers. The objectives of this descriptive study were to describe the current risk management of these injuries in the emergency unit of Wiang Haeng Hospital, Chiang Mai Province, and to propose ways to solve risk management problems. The participants included 35 hospital personnel. Data were collected usingsemi-structure interviews, a focus group discussion and documentation reviews.Content analysis was applied to data analysis based on the quality assessment framework by Donabedian (2003) which consists of 3 aspects: 1) a structural aspect, 2) a process aspect, and 3) an outcome aspect. The results were as follows: 1. Structural aspect: The emergency unit of Wiang Haeng Hospital has no specific organizational structure for risk management of needlestick and sharps injuries. A budget was allocated to purchase essential equipment and supplies. However, there wasadelayin receiving suppliesdue to inadequate budget planning.Shortage of nursing personnel was also found to be a problem. Suggestions included providing sufficient essential equipment and supplies, adequate staffing and also supporting hospital personnel to enhance knowledge and skills. 2. Process aspect: There were four steps for risk management of needlestick and sharps injuries, consisting of: risk identification, risk assessment, action to manage risk, and evaluation. Identified problems were: lack of awareness of incident reporting, incorrect assessment of risk severity, inadequate knowledge regarding use of tools for quality improvement and not following safety guidelines. Recommendations were made as follows: 1) raising awareness on reporting incidents among hospital personnel, 2) educating hospital personnel regarding risk severity and use of tools for quality improvement, and 3) encouraging hospital personnel to follow safety guidelines. 3. Outcome aspect: It was found that the incidents of needlestick and sharps injuries in the emergency unit of this hospital remained to be seen. The result of this study could be used as baseline information regarding risk management of needlestick and sharps injuries in the emergency unit of Wiang Haeng Hospital, Chiang Mai Province. It is recommended that hospital administrators and nurse administrators use this information to develop strategies to improve risk management of needlestick and sharps injuries.
