Abstract: The objectives of the research ontology developed for textile knowledge of highland ethnic groups are 1) access and retrieval of knowledge on the highland ethnic groups textiles 2) analyzed the content and determine the structure about ontology on textile knowledge of highland ethnic groups and 3) developed ontology on textile knowledge of highland ethnic groups by using research and development principles, divided into 2 phases, first phase is study on access and knowledge retrieval, and content analysis and knowledge structure determination. Second phase is a development. The result showed that, most information sources do not have a written policy operation on the textiles, but only a textiles operation plan and the agency’s mission operation plan was found. There are provide and collect all information resources. There are analysis, classification, and information storage in different sources. Most information resources have the problems about limited supply budget and they lack analysis and classification; therefore, they are scattered in many places. In addition, the access and retrieval of highland ethnic groups textiles information are generally used for occupational purposes. Moreover, to access the information of highland ethnic groups textiles from institutional information sources, the users use a manual search method through the Bibliographic database (OPAC) and read the category labels. The problems in retrieving the textile information are related to the use of search terms that are too technical or jargons and the lack of search tools is also an obstacle. The results of knowledge analysis of highland ethnic textile obtained 9 kind of knowledge group, 12 classes, 1,297 sub-classes and 1,409 words related to highland ethnic textile. Then, the knowledge structure is defined as a hierarchy of 9 knowledge categories. It is divided into 69 sub- classes categories and 1,393 words. Ontology developed for textile knowledge of highland ethnic groups include knowledge domain is highland ethnic textile knowledge and 9 sub-domains were (1) highland ethnic textile patterns (2) materials for producing textile (3) raw materials for producing textile (4) equipments for producing textile (5) highland ethnic costumes (6) highland ethnic jewelry (7) highland ethnic weaving and knitting process (8) techniques for producing textile and (9) colors of textile. Ontology developed for textile knowledge of highland ethnic groups has 69 classes, 1,393 sub-classes, 39 kinds of hierarchical relationship with 2,214 items, 19 kinds of properties with 759 items and 1,462 instances.
