Abstract: Purpose: This study investigated the influence of different surface treatments of PEEK substrate on shear bond strength to resin composite. Methods: A total of 105 PEEK specimens were randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 21/group): (1) no treatment, (2) 98% sulfuric acid etching, (3) sandblasting with 50 |Im alumina oxide particles at a pressure of 0.35 MPa, (4) diode laser treatment and (5) diode laser combined with sandblast treatment. The topography of pretreated PEEK surfaces was observed with scanning electron microscopy. Surface roughness (SR) evaluation was conducted. PEEK surfaces were veneered with resin composite using resin-based adhesive e (Visio.link™ ). Shear bond strength (SBS) between PEEK and resin composite was measured with universal testing machine and failure modes were examined by stereomicroscopy. The SR and SBS data were analyzed statistically with one-way ANOVA an followed by a post hoc Tukey test for SBS data and Dunnett T3 test for SR data at the confidence interval of 95% (  = 0.05). Results: All tested groups exhibited significantly higher SR and SBS values (p<0.05) than the no-treatment group. The PEEK surface after laser treatment followed by sandblast group exhibited the highest mean Ra values. The highest SBS values were found in acid-etched PEEK surfaces (26.08 ± 1.76 MPa) No significant differences in SBS values were observed between acid- etched, sandblast and laser combined with sandblast groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Sulfuric acid etching, sandblasting, laser irradiation and combination of laser and sandblast improved the adhesive strength between PEEK material and resin composite.
