Abstract: This study aimed at studying the Behaviors Influencing Debt Creation by Employees of a Commercial Bank in Chiang Mai Province, consisting of the study into the behavior that affects the debt incurrence of employees of a commercial bank in Chiang Mai. The study was divided into 4 parts: Part 1 was the study into the behavior that affects the debt incurrence to respond to one’s basic needs; Part 2 was the behavior that affects the debt incurrence to respond to other needs and relationship of behaviors in the different debt level; Part 3 was the study into the way of debt incurrence; Part 4 was the study into the problem of being in debt. It was a quantitative research. Population used in this research included 421 employees of a commercial bank in Chiang Mai for 36 branches, consisting of 122 samples. Questionnaires were used as a tool in collecting data, and the data analysis was done by using frequency, percentage, means, and chi-square. It was found from the study samples of employees of a commercial bank in Chiang Mai who responded to questions were mostly female, graduated with a bachelor’s degree, were single, aged lower than 31 years old, had an income of 15,000 – 30,000 baht per month, and held the position of operation staff. The behavior that affects the debt incurrence in terms of basic needs was found that mostly, it was to spend money for consuming, choosing to buy dresses, and for houses at medium level; behavior in spending for health was at a small level. The behavior that affects the debt incurrence on other factors was found that, spending money in traveling, buying accessories/ luxurious goods/ facilities, spending money for relaxation was at a medium level; and the behavior to spend money for sports/ recreation/ hobbies, behavior for education of one’s own and of children, behavior in investment/ buying fund/ buying insurance/ supplementary business, and behavior in spending money for other people under patronage was at a small level; on the relationship, the behavior to spend for consuming, the behavior in spending for houses, buying accessories/ luxurious goods/ facilities, behavior in investment/ buying fund/ buying insurance/ supplementary business all had a relationship with the amount of debt amount. The characteristics or the way of debt incurrence of the population of bank employees had similar amount—the debt was around 200,001 – 500,000 baht, more than half of the credit source was from the loan from fund/ welfare of their own enterprise, with the burden to return the debt for 5,0001 – 10,000 baht per month, The length of time of returning period by installment was within 6 – 10 years, the type of credit was mostly credit card/ cash card. It is of opinion that at present there are sufficient loan sources for the demand. The objective of debt incurrence was for daily life expenses. The population of bank employees did not have a problem in paying debt since the burden of installment is low. However, they had an opinion in that the current interest rate was not appropriate; there was no problem about requesting for loan approval. Other problems were found from the data collection as well including feeling down due to the imbalance debt, and being in debt that was more than it should be thus less income that was not enough to respond to needs.
