Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the academic competency of graduates of the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration at Chiang Mai University. This academic competency was divided into two parts: core competency, and functional competency. The study aimed to analyze the compatibility of the competency of the graduates to the needs of employers. This study also aimed to make use of the comments of the employers to improve the academic quality of graduates of the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration, Chiang Mai University. The hypothesis of this study were graduates from the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration, Chiang Mai University have core competency compatible to the needs of employers. Graduates from the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration, Chiang Mai University have functional competency compatible to the needs of employers. The core competency needed by employers of the government sector and private sector was not different. The core competency of the graduates who work in the government sectors and the private sectors were not different Students from two graduate degree programs comprised the two main sample groups. The first group consisted of graduates who majored in Politics and Government, whereas the second group came from graduates in the Public Administration program. Questionnaires were used as the main tool of data collection. The data collected was analyzed by means of statistical analysis methods. It was found that the graduates’ core competency in knowledge and skill of management was evaluated as “moderate” while the graduates’ skill in technique, such as the use of computer and their personal behavior, were evaluated as “high”. However, it was also found that the graduates’ core competency was not compatible with the employers’ needs, while functional competency was evaluated “high” in every aspect. The graduates’ overall performance, however, was found to be both “high” and “moderate”. It was found that the desirable competency proposed by both employers and graduates in each competency aspect was not different, which was consistent with the hypothesis. This, however, did not include graduates whose work was concerned with budgetary and financial aspects. They had different functional competencies, which was not consistent with the hypothesis of this research. This research supports the idea that the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration should provide the undergraduates with more relevant knowledge and training so that they can effectively apply their knowledge in their work. The graduates who are equipped with knowledge relevant to their career field will be in greater demand by various agencies. This will in turn indicate that the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration department has achieved its goal in producing undergraduates with relevant knowledge and skill in their future career fields. These undergraduates will eventually become more capable graduates who can compete in the evolving labor market and help their country achieve development goals and prosperity.
