Abstract: Negative self-talk can be replaced by positive self-talk and positive self talk can also help to reduce depression. The one group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental research aimed to examine the effect of Positive Self-talk Training Program on depression among patients with alcohol dependence, at Suan Prung Psychiatric Hospital, Chiang Mai Province. The subjects included 12 patients with alcohol dependence with moderate and mild levels of depression who received services at Suan Prung Psychiatric Hospital, Chiang Mai Province between October through-December 2015. The research instruments consisted of 1) Demographic Data Form of Among Patients with Alcohol Dependence, 2) 9-Item Thai Patient Health Questionnaire (Thai PHQ-9) by Lotrakul, Sumrithe, & Saipani (2008), and 3) The Positive Self-talk Training Program which was modified by Boonmeun, Thapinta and Kitsumban (2015) from a Positive Self-talk Training Program developed by Mahakittikun (2005) based on the concept of Nelson-Jones (1990) and related literature review, and tested for content validity by three expert. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon Matched Pair Signed-Ranks Test.   The results of the study revealed that: Mean score of depression among patients with alcohol dependence at the end of the Positive Self-talk Training Program was significantly lower than that before enrolling in the program (p < .05). The results of this study indicated that a Positive Self-talk Training Program was effective in reducing depression among patients with alcohol dependence. Further implications of these findings suggest that a psychiatric nurse should use this program as an alternative treatment of depression.
