Abstract: The prevalence of Candida infections has been rising with an increasingly older adult populations and immunocompromised patients. Candida species are major human fungal pathogens that cause oral candidiasis. Overgrowth of candida, can lead to local discomfort, pain, soreness, an altered taste sensation and dysphagia resulting in poor nutrition.Older adult and immunocompromised patients have an increased incidence of invasive candidiasis, which has higher mortality rates. Although probiotic strains, used in commercially available yogurts, to inhibit growth of Candida species. But it is still questionable whether eating such yogurt will affect the quantity of oral Candida. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a daily intake yogurt contained Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus paracasei and Bifidobacterium lactis on the prevalence and counts of oral Candida in older adults. The study had a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled design with 2 parallel arms. The study group consisted of 60 female older adults who lived in Choeng Doi Subdistrict, Doi Saket District Chiang Mai Province Thailand. After baseline examination and randomization, the subjects were given yogurt containing Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus paracasei and Bifidobacterium lactis or placebo twice daily. The intervention period was 14 days, and saliva were collected at baseline and after administration period. Results showed statistically significant reduction in the prevalence of Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida tropicalis and Candida counts in study group, and the control group was statistically significant reduction in the prevalence of Candida glabrata (P < 0.05) The secondary outcome showed statistically significant increase the amount of unstimulated saliva and pH in study group, these all two factors were of statistically significant negative relation to prevalence of Candida albicans and Candida counts. In conclusion, short term consumption of yogurt contained Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus paracasei and Bifidobacterium lactis may represent an alternative to prevent oral candidiasis and hyposalivation in older adults.
