Abstract: Battery chargers are widely employed in plug-in electric vehicles, which require grid power to recharge batteries. Battery chargers are divided into two types according to their operations, i.e. off- board battery chargers and on-board battery chargers. Due to the strength of the electric vehicle's interior equipment utilization, the flexibility in use, and cost-effectiveness, on-board battery chargers are becoming increasingly popular. Their configurations are considered to reduce volume, weight, and cost by combining the hardware operation of the charging system and the driving system together, like converters and motors, namely, an "integrated on-board battery charger." In addition, there have been a lot of studies done on the on-board battery, but they still have problems with common-mode voltage problems, power factor correction, and controlling the battery charger system. To study, analyze, and overcome these problems, this thesis presents an isolated integrated on-board battery charger system for plug-in electric vehicles using an open-end winding ac motor drive with a nine-switch converter based on current vector control and space vector pulse width modulation. Moreover, a control algorithm for the distorted and unbalanced grid voltage conditions is also presented in this thesis to improve the grid power quality and support the operation when an unusual grid condition occurs. The validity and feasibility of the proposed battery charger are verified through the simulation results, the performances of the system operation are compared with that of other existing researchers.
