Abstract: This research aims to create a model for classifying research and development projects of the Mae Moh Power Plant based on their commercialization potential. The classification is done using decision tree techniques in conjunction with attributes selection, analyzing data trends with Business Intelligence. The sample group was collected through a survey of research and development projects of the Mae Moh Power Plant that were funded between the years 2008 to 2021, totaling 56 projects. All the projects were classified based on their commercial potential by experts in innovation promotion, collaborating with research organizations. This data was then transformed into Business Intelligence. The analysis using Business Intelligence revealed six characteristics related to the commercialization potential of research and development projects as 1) Patentability, 2) Type of Utilization, 3) Continuous real-world application ability, 4) Progression from previous project, 5) Research institution capability, and 6) Investment size. These six characteristics were used to create a model for classifying the commercialization potential of research and development projects using a decision tree model. The model's performance was tested using a 10-fold cross-validation. This resulted in a highly effective decision tree model with an accuracy of 96.00%, an average precision of 95.89%, and an average recall of 94.75%. This research provides recommendations for managing and organizing projects in line with their commercial potential, divided into three evaluation phases: pre-investment, project execution, and project completion. It was found that evaluating commercial potential in the pre-investment phase is challenging and has a high risk of bias. On the other hand, evaluating commercial potential at the project completion stage provides the most clear-cut results, enabling precise and appropriate project management strategies to be established.
