Abstract: Father involvement in the care of preterm infants in neonatal care unit is important for the physical health, the psychological health, and the development of preterm infants. This descriptive correlational study aimed to explore father involvement in caring for preterm infants and to study the relationship between the personal data of fathers, father sense of competence, and father social support for involvement in the care of preterm infants in neonatal care unit. The participants were fathers of preterm infants admitted to the neonatal care unit at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital; the Health Promotion Center Region 1, Chiang Mai; Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital; and Nakhon Phanom Hospital between July and October 2022. The participants were selected by purposive sampling following the inclusion criteria and consisted of 85 cases. The research instruments consisted of the Personal Data Record of Fathers and Preterm Infants Form, the Father Involvement of Preterm Infants Care Questionnaire, the Father Sense of Competence Questionnaire, and the Father Social Support of Preterm Infants Questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Eta correlation coefficient, and Pearson’s product-moment correlation. The results showed that 58.82% of fathers had overall father involvement in caring for preterm infants in neonatal care unit in a moderate level (x̄=72.74, SD = 14.24). Education level and income had a positive, statistically significant correlations with father involvement in caring for preterm infants in neonatal care unit (η=.726, p<.01 and η=.757, p<.05, respectively). Father social support had a positive statistically significant correlation with father involvement in caring for preterm infants in neonatal care unit in a moderate level (r=.407, p<.01). The results of this research can be used as basic information to guide nursing planning to appropriately encourage father involvement in caring for preterm infants in neonatal care unit.
