Abstract: The best prevention for stroke is the promotion of health behavior changes for controlling the risk factors that cause disease, especially the risk factors from inappropriate health behaviors. This quasi-experimental research aimed to examine the effect of the health belief enhancing program on stroke prevention behaviors of at-risk persons in community, comparing the average scores for stroke prevention behaviors between one group, before and after their participation in the health belief enhancing program, and another group that received normal health care service. The sample group included 44 persons at risk for stroke, aged 35 years and over, with 22 persons in a control group and 22 persons in an experimental group. The study was conducted in Ban Kho Subdistrict, Muang Pan District, Lampang Province. The research instruments included the health belief enhancing program for stroke prevention behaviors in at-risk persons, developed from the concept of the health belief model theory by Becker and Maiman (1975), and the stroke-risk control behavior questionnaire. The health belief enhancing program passed a content accuracy check by 6 experts, and the stroke-risk control behavior questionnaire tested for a coefficient of stability of .81. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Fisher’s exact test, independent t-test, and paired t-test. The results showed that after participating in the health belief enhancing program for 12 weeks, the experimental group had average scores for stroke prevention behaviors which were higher than before participating in the program and more than that of the control group, which received normal hospital services with statistical significance (p<.001). The outcome indicates that health belief enhancing programs should be recommended for promoting perceived stroke self-awareness in at-risk persons and can improve good health practices which could lead to stroke prevention behaviors.
