Abstract

The dynamics of economic and social changes of shrimp farmers in Ranot, Songkhla Province were caused by various factors and conditions from 1947 to 1957. With the expansion of the state into the countryside, the farmers in Ranot District have changed, from self-sufficient production to production for sale, resulting in a better quality of life, even more so through access to markets.This modification of the way of production has resulted in a better standard of life in the whole area. Since 1987, the government has supported and encouraged farmers in coastal areas to change their farming practices from self-sufficiency to a market-oriented approach, especially in the Ranot area because it is suitable for shrimp farming.Many farmers have turned to shrimp farming to create a better quality of life. Seizing this opportunity has resulted in the fast expansion of shrimp farming in the area. As a result, the economy in the Ranot area grew exponentially. Even though shrimp farming declined in the 1990s, there were still positive elements, namely the process of building skills and self-improvement led to the transformation from “shrimp farmers” to “shrimp entrepreneurs”. Shrimp farmers have made connections to modern networks and learned about new production models. This process led them to a new experience that created visions and resulted in better economic perspectives From this experience, changing relationship’s patterns of people in the community and new opportunities, together with the readiness to become an “entrepreneur’ have created a “Shrimp Farming Entrepreneur Society”, that gave farmers great potential and a readiness to improve their economic condition.
