Abstract: This research aims to study the correlation between the knowledge and understanding of local governance and the political participation behavior of Chiangmai University students. It can lead to ways to enhance knowledge, understanding and more participation in the future. By using quantitative research methods together with qualitative research methods, A questionnaire about knowledge and understanding of local governance and local political participation was used by 396 people, using descriptive statistics to analyze the data. together with interviews with representatives of 10 Chiang Mai University students, based on the research hypothesis that knowledge and understanding of local government can affect local political participation. The results showed that the sample group and the interviewees had a moderate level of understanding about local government at a high level. But it's just a piece of knowledge that doesn't go into much depth. When considering local political participation, they found that it did not meet the hypothesis. This can show that the knowledge and understanding of local government does not directly affect local political participation. As the sample group and interviewees tended to respond in the same direction, they had little experience of participating in political issues. The information obtained from the interviews revealed that the interviewees believed that local politics was not as important as national politics, and they lacked faith and were not aware of their participation in local politics. Therefore, the universities must provide compulsory courses to raise awareness of the importance of national and local political participation. Another issue is many interviewees were not studied in their homeland. Therefore, it is the barrier to the electoral vote. Students who go to study outside their homeland must move the house registration to be able to vote. This may make greater participation in local politics, including having solutions for those who are far away from polling stations, such as online elections and vote-casting outside the constituency (pre-election), in order to protect those people's rights as well.
