Abstract: The objective of this research was to examine the effects of individual counseling on self-care among people living with HIV. Data from a self-care behavior assessment before, during and at the end of the counseling along with the qualitative data. That is, the data were recorded in accordance with the eclectic approach of counseling between the person-centered counseling and behaviorism approach. The results illustrated that the self-care behavior scores of the four samples tended to increase in all three requisite aspects: the universal self-care, the developmental self-care, and the health deviation self-care. Moreover, the qualitative findings of the study revealed that behavior modification during the psychological counseling process raised the awareness of their own health conditions among the clients. Through the reinforcement that came in, it encouraged self-care actions to reach the set goals. Additionally, it also resulted in the clints learning to increase the stimulus and to continuously reinforce themselves to maintain self-regulation in self-care. The results of the data analysis revealed other findings beyond the conceptual framework. That is, the results could additionally generate four effects on the characteristics among the clients; namely psychological characteristics, self-acceptance, self-esteem and peer relationship.
