Abstract: Nowadays, traffic congestion is one of the important problems that contribute to energy depletion and air pollution. The yearly report of the global weather found that the high level of air pollution causes the decreasing rate of lifespan among the population in the area by 20 months, and more than 90 percent of the population lives in the area that under the standard of World Health Organization (State Of Global Air, 2562.) This study indicates that vehicles using fuel are important sources of air pollution in large cities around the world, as well as in Thailand. Typical physical characteristics of intersections have an insufficient performance of road users. These problems effect the efficiency of vehicle mobility which leads to the traffic congestion problem. Control of intersection is the selection of resolving the problem for the convenience and safety of road users. Moreover, they decrease the impacts of energy and environment. This study is to analyze the energy and environmental efficiencies for the control of intersections by applying the microscopic traffic simulation model (PTV VISSIM) to generate a cross-area model controlled in various alternative models. Then, analyzed consists of travel delay, fuel consumption, and air pollution consideration for sufficiency of the intersection. The analyzation includes 2 sections, the first section is the analyzation of the design and control for 3 intersections which are case study 1) four-legged, two-lane intersections, case study 2) four-legged with major four-lane roads and minor two-lane roads, and case study 3) four-legged, four-lane intersections by assigning the different traffic volume between major and minor road. The second section is the analyzation of the energy and environmental impact for intersection control of Chiang Rai 2 road, Chiang Mai University. The results showed that under the same traffic conditions, intersection control would affect fuel consumption and emission differently. Therefore, selecting an appropriate intersection design control could result in sustainable benefits for both users and communities.
