Abstract: Sudden cardiac arrest from severe cardiac arrhythmia is a common cause of death. The implantation of an automatic cardioverter defibrillator is not only life saving therapy but it also affects physical, psychological, and social function. The objectives of this study were to survey the functional status, anxiety and depression of persons with automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator who received care from the cardiovascular specialty noninvasive unit at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital. One hundred and twenty-five subjects were purposively selected and questionnaires were sent by mail. Ninety-five subjects returned questionnaires which accounted for 76%. Data collection instruments included: 1) Demographic Data Recording Form, 2) The Functional Status Questionnaire (Jette et al., 1986), which was translated and back-translated for this study by researcher, 3) The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Form Y: STAI Form Y-1 and STAI Form Y-2 (Spielberger et al., 1983), translated into Thai by Nontasak, Iamsupasit, and Tapinta and 4) Beck Depression Inventory IA (BDI-IA) (Beck, 1978, as cited in Beck et al., 1979) translated into Thai by Mukda Sriyong. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics; range, frequency, percent, mean, and standard deviation.   The results of this study were: 1. Data regarding The Functional Status Questionnaire showed that: 1.1 Subjects had basic activities of daily living scores at a good level 71.60% and intermediate activities of daily living scores 45.30%. 1.2 Subjects had mental health scores at a good level 50.50%. 1.3 Subjects had work performance scores at a good level 26.30%, social activities scores 55.80% and quality of interaction scores 69.50%. 2. The majority of subjects (90.50%) had trait and state anxiety. 3. The majority of subjects (76.80%) did not have depression. Study findings showed the problems related to impaired intermediate activities of daily living, mental health, social function and anxiety. This finding should be presented to the relevant departments to work for an improvement of nursing care.
