Abstract: The purpose of this research was to study the effect of silver nanoparticles on the dye removal efficiency of Reactive Red 239 (RR239) by sludge from the wastewater treatment plant of Chiang Mai University. The free sludge and the immobilized sludge were used. The results showed that free sludge and immobilized sludge were effective in removing RR239 dye at concentrations as high as 500 mg/L. The optimum pH for dye removal was 7 and 9. In addition, the sludge showed 82.28% of RR239 dye removal efficiency at a maximum salt concentration of 60 g/L in 48 hours. The concentration of silver nanoparticles had little effect on the dye removal efficiency of RR239, which may be due to decolorization under anaerobic conditions. Reuse of the immobilized sludge can be repeated up to 8 cycles. The product after decolorization of RR239 showed more toxicity than RR239. This is consistent with the results of the functional group analysis of dye RR239 using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) technique indicating that the product after microbial removal has a structure that causes toxicity to living organisms. Therefore, dye removal via this technique should be improved so that the product is less toxic before being released into the environment.
