A study of gain improvement of a quarter-wave monopole antenna is presented. A technique of wire medium structure, a type of metamaterial, is applied to display the possibility of the gain enhancement of monopole. Wire medium structure, wire metamaterial, illustrates an artificial electromagnetic structure determined as arrays of aligned metal wires or rods embedded into dielectric matrices. In this paper, the cylindrical and square wire medium structures have been designed and optimized to study of gain improvement at the operating frequency of 10 GHz. From our study, we found that the proper cylindrical wire medium structure is capable to improve the gain by around 4.2 dB, when compared to a single quarter-wave monopole antenna. Moreover, the fabricated proposed monopole antenna has a good qualitative agreement between measured and simulated results.en_US
