Abstract: This research presents the optimal capacitor placement in a medium-voltage (MV) distribution system with a distributed generator (DG) connected using a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The purpose is to minimize power line losses and the cost of installing shunt capacitors. The DIgSILENT PowerFactory software is used to create the network model and perform a power flow analysis. MATLAB would be applied to find the optimal result from the proposed PSO algorithm. The proposed algorithm validated its effectiveness against the other algorithms reported in the literature under the IEEE 33-bus test system. The real power distribution system of Electricité du Lao (EDL) in Savannakhet province is also investigated, which is considered without and with distributed generator connected to the distribution grid. The results would be demonstrated the optimal number, size, and location of capacitor banks, which can reduce line losses by more than 30%, and the voltage profile also regulates within allowable limits. Furthermore, considering the distributed generator connected that the proposed algorithm suggests the installation of at least 4 units, the power loss can be significantly reduced by about 60% compared to the base case. The investment analysis shows that the case without a distributed generator is more interesting as it offers greater worthiness. Since the potential to reduce energy loss in this system is evident, the EDL Savannakhet province is required the installation of the capacitor banks to enhance the efficiency and maintain the stability of the system. As well, the developed tool can accomplish to implement in the practical distribution system for conducting the capacitor placement following the planner.
