Abstract: This work presents a control mechanism of power to grid (P2G) generated from solar PV by using battery energy storage system (BESS). The P2G is either fixed or allowed to vary with a given range. The battery sizing can be determined by formulating an optimization problem to minimize the fluctuation of P2G. The fluctuation can be minimized by compensating power ramping of solar PV with battery power. The decision variables are power and energy capacities of BESS. The proposed mechanism was tested with a 5-kWp solar rooftop PV in Lampang province. The load and PV generation data are measured every 5, 15, and 30 minutes. The dataset is classified into 4 representative weeks in January, April, August, and October to reflect seasonal variations of solar PV generation. Upon solution for battery sizing, an economic analysis is then performed to justify an investment. The levelized cost of energy is calculated from the capital cost of solar PV and BESS as well as the annual operation and maintenance cost. The annual revenues are calculated from energy sale to grid and energy savings for load. Payback period and net present value are used as economic indicators.
