Acute illness is the most frequent reason for children, especially those younger than 5 years, to be admitted to the hospital. Parents should be involved in the care of children in hospitals. This predictive correlational research study aimed to describe predictability of nurse support, parents’ self-efficacy, parents’ experience in caring for a child with an illness, and parents’ perceived severity of the disease toward parent participation in caring for hospitalized children with acute illnesses. Schepp’s parent participation concept was used as the study framework. The sample, selected according to the inclusion criteria, was 104 parents of hospitalized children with acute illnesses aged 1 month to 5 years admitted to the pediatric unit of Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, Lampang Hospital, and Buddhachinaraj Pitsanulok Hospital during January to March 2014. The research instruments consisted of Schepp’s Parents’ Participation Scalestranslated into Thai by Chaichana et al., (2003), the Nurse Parent Support Tool developedby Mile et al (1999), which the researcher translated into Thai by back translation method, the Self-efficacy of Parent Participation in Caring for Hospitalized Children with Acute Illness Questionnaire developed by Boonroad (2010), and the Scale of Severity of Diseaseas Perceived by Parents developed by Kaphan et al (2010). The Cronbach’s alphacoefficients of the Parents’ Participation Scales in Caring Hospitalized Children with AcuteIllness, the Nurse Parent Support Tool, and the Self-efficacy of Parent Participation in Caring for Hospitalized Children with Acute Illness Questionnaire were .91, .96 and .91, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression. The study results revealed that:1. Self-efficacy of parents explained 30.2% of the variation in parent participation in caring for hospitalized children with an acute illness (R2 = .302, p<.001); and2. Nurse support, parental experience in caring for a child with an illness, and parentalperceived severity of the disease could not explain the variation in parent participation in caring for hospitalized children with an acute illness. The results provide information regarding the influence of parental self-efficacy which may be used to develop nursing interventions to enhance the self-efficacy of parents in their participation in caring for hospitalized children with an acute illness
